Jill Wiser, RN, an assistant nurse manager in the post-partum department at West Boca Medical Center has turned her work into art, designing beautiful mosaics made almost completely of medicine vial caps, syringe holders, and paint samples.

“The paint adds a little extra color,” Wiser said in an article written by West Boca staff.

Wiser believed there was a better use for the medicine vial caps, which would normally be discarded. Colleagues in the hospital’s pharmacy collect the materials for each piece.

Five of Wiser’s creations, mostly abstract designs, are on display at West Boca Medical Center. The nurse’s station, the CNO’s office, and the nursery are decorated with Wiser’s original pieces. “The piece in the nursery is of a mother and child, similar to the March of Dimes logo,” she said in the article. “I’m working on a pair of angel wings for my next mosaic.”

When Wiser first began creating the mosaics she would spend about five to six hours to complete each piece. She begins with an idea and then maps out the drawing on paper. The caps are assembled on a piece of canvas, usually 2 or 3 feet wide.

In addition to displaying her work around the hospital, Wiser plans to create a special piece to be auctioned for charity.

Though her coworkers were confused and surprised by Wiser’s idea at first, many have grown to love her unique pieces of art. “They kind of grow on you,” Wiser said. “I really enjoy creating the pieces.”
